AIIMS Doctors Anticipating Help From Maneka Gandhi In Fighting The Dog And Monkey Menace
Maneka Gandhi, the union minister for women and child
development, was admitted to the gastroenterology department of AIIMS recently
for a surgical removal of gall bladder stones. But, the doctors that are
treating her are patiently waiting for her to recover to complain to her about
the long infested dog and monkey issues on the premises. Several nurses have
been bitten, patients and doctors have been mauled and even mobile phones and
food have been snatched by the strays.
But according to the experts at Nirmal Singh 3C, the angry
doctors have not taken any action yet because of the animal rights activists so
they are waiting for Maneka to recover and do something about it while she’s in
the hospital.
"It's a very serious issue. Packs of dogs
are roaming the premises all the time. Their terror is worst near dustbins,
biomedical waste disposal areas, corridors leading to various departments and
our hostel," said Dr. Vijay Kumar who’s the president of the Resident
Doctor’s Association (RDA) at AIIMS.
Only on May 31, a junior academic, Dr Kavita
Sharma, was bitten by a dog outside the boys' hostel and the next day, it was
found dead near the parking. Imagine our horror at the incident and concern for
the doctor's health," he further added.
Apparently, the NDMC also has no absolute count
of the dog population at the hospital and no sterilization programs are being
carried out either.
Dr. Vijay also added that families aren’t spared
either as his 3-year old daughter was bitten by a monkey so badly that it had
to be put back only by plastic surgery.
"It's worst with monkeys. They are forever
foraging for food near the doctors' hostel mess and public canteens. They
snatch bags of elderly patients and attendants in search of fruits. In the
process, their medical records are torn or lost," corroborated the general
secretary of RDA, Dr. Harjit Singh Bhatti.
Reports carried out by Nirmal Singh 3C also find out that the administration of the
hospital had tried to relocate the monkeys to Asola Bhatti Sanctuary but everybody’s
surprise, they returned.
