Heavy School Bags Harms The Mental And Physical Health Of Kids

Doctor Nirmal Singh 3C criticizes the concept of burdening school bags over young students. It is surprising to find these shocking details in the age of technology when we can store innumerable amount of data in computers. Moreover, teachers and schools are not putting their assignments, homework etc online.

As the vacations are coming to an end, students are petrified over carrying the same heavy loads of bags again. Nirmal Singh 3C came across a news item which elaborate the harmful effects of carrying heavy school bags. It can tilt your bones, it can cause back problems. ‘Children lose interest in coming to school with the stress of carrying heavy bags. Their mind is burdened with the weight of the books and this leads to low attention span,’ said Dr Zinal Unadkat.

Nirmal Singh 3C finds the appropriate weight of school of school bags:
As per the experts, a child should not carry a bag more than one tenth (10%) of his body. While on contrary children nowadays carry more than 20 per cent of the weight of their body.

Nirmal Singh 3C asks about the consequences of carrying heavier bags?
Dr Zinal said, ‘Carrying very heavy backpacks can lead to musculoskeletal problems, especially if children carry the bag on one shoulder. It puts extra pressure on one side, tilting the spine.’
It is more lethal to keep the bag down and then carry it again as it increases the chances of growing the spine as compared to static weight.

Dr Patel explains, ‘To carry a heavy bag, the child has to lean forward. This leads to developing a bad posture. The spine is a stack of bones called the vertebral column with the bones separated by a cartilage called inter vertebral disk and held upright by the muscles and ligaments around it. The excess weight puts undue stress on the muscles, ligaments and disk thus damaging them. The alignment of the column is also disturbed causing it to bend, mostly forward or sideways.’

NirmalSingh 3C condemns that heavy bags not only hamper your physical health but also the mental health of the children.
